A New Chapter At The Muskingum County Library System
The Muskingum County Library System is about to embark on a transformative journey, and the excitement in Zanesville is palpable. This fall, the John McIntire Library will undergo a $9 million renovation—a project that promises to redefine what a library can be for its community.
Executive Director Stacey Russell shared her vision for the project, saying, “Every time I look at the plans, I get excited because this is what our community needs and deserves.” With over three decades of dedication to the library system, Stacey has seen its evolution firsthand, but this renovation marks a new milestone.
Key changes include a dynamic children’s area with interactive play spaces, a dedicated teen room designed to offer a safe and engaging environment, and updated seating areas to accommodate diverse needs. Stacey emphasized the importance of creating spaces that resonate with everyone, from young families to lifelong learners.
“This will be a place where teens can gather, where children can play, and where the community can come together,” she said. “We’re building not just for today, but for the generations that follow.”
Construction is set to begin in October 2024 and is expected to conclude by May 2026, a timeline that reflects the library’s commitment to moving this vision forward efficiently and effectively. The funding reflects a collaborative effort, with $4.5 million allocated by the library board and the remainder sourced through state grants and local contributions.
Stacey highlighted the broader significance of the project: “When you think about library service 33 years ago, the world was so different. We need to ensure we’re meeting the expectations of our community today and into the future.”
As Zanesville watches this transformation unfold, the library’s role as a cornerstone of the community is reinforced.
